Costa Blanca Trail Weekend 2nd – 6th June 2022

Registration Now Closed….!

Join me on the beautiful Costa Blanca for a long weekend of Spanish sunshine and stunning mountain trail running.

The Costa Blanca has some of the best mountain trails in Spain.  The terrain is varied and goes from easy wide caminos or tracks to incredible senders or single paths with rocky sections and plenty of elevation.

We will be staying at La Vila Joiosa, a small town just along the coast from Benidorm and about a 45 minute transfer from Alicante.  It’s a typically Spanish town and is well known in the area for its chocolate factories and in particular the famous Valor Chocolate factory which could be worth a visit.  There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and a beautiful long sandy beach.

Behind La Vila Joiosa is the iconic and impressive Puig Campana.  It’s the 2nd highest peak in the Valencia province with an elevation of 1406 meters above sea level.  It is a mecca for trail runners and mountain walkers with a great circular route and an option to climb to the main summit via the vertical kilometre
We will be staying at the 4 star beach front Hotel Allon Mediterrania.  The hotel boasts stunning beach views, private pool, a restaurant/café and bar.  It’s a great base for exploring the local area and only a short drive to the mountain trails.

The rooms are spacious twin rooms and the price is based on two people sharing.  Breakfast is included.

La Vila Joiosa has a good selection of bars and restaurants for lunch or evening meals or the hotel has a café/bar and restaurant.

The closest airport is Alicante, it’s approximately a 45 minute transfer to La Vila Joiosa.  The price includes minibus transfers from and to Alicante airport.

Arrive Thursday 2nd June

Late afternoon/early evening trail run to Torre del Aguilo.

A relaxed run from the hotel of 12-14km along the coastal path to Torre del Aguilo to stretch the legs after travelling.

Friday 3rd June

After Breakfast at the hotel we will head to the mountain town of Finestrat a few kms inland to start our run.  Transport will be provided to and from Finestrat.

We’ll head off from the higher car park near Puig Campana and run to a little picnic area at the Font del Arc just outside the small mountain village of Sella.

We’ll cover 22-24km today with approximately 1200m of positive elevation.

The run will take us along some wide trails with incredible views of Puig Campana until we reach a small single track that takes us through el Pass de la Golero. From here we continue to climb towards the Pass de la Contador before heading back down to Font del Arc on some beautiful wide trails.

Saturday 4th June

After breakfast at the hotel, we will again head to Finestrat to start today’s run.

The run will take us from Font del Moli anticlockwise to Coll de Pouett. From Coll de Pouett we will continue to climb towards Coll de Llam and then to the summit of Ponoig at 1181m.

We will then drop down towards Sacarest via single tracks until we reach Cuave de la Moscarda; from here we will run down to Casa de Dios and the Helipuerto at Polop. We will then climb 520m in a distance of just 2.4k through a stunning pine forest before taking the trail back to Font del Moli. In total we’ll cover around 26Km and 1665m of positive elevation; there will be plenty of time to stop and take photos and time to have a few snacks to refuel.

Sunday 4th June

VK1 – Puig Campana Vertical KM

The beautiful and mighty Puig Campana is the 2nd highest peak in the Valencia province with an elevation of 1,406 m above sea level.  It has an incredibly dramatic profile which cannot be missed from the coast.

The most direct route to the summit of the mountain is via the Sky Running “Vertical Kilometre” from just above Finestrat.  This route starts at Font Del Moli and works its way up gently initially but then takes a steep track through a gully to reach the summit.  You will need a head for heights as towards the summit we will have scree to negotiate and there will be some scrambling required.  The views from the summit are worth the climb.

Once at the summit the descent takes you off the back of the mountain which is less steep to Coll del Pouet where we have options to run clockwise or anticlockwise back to the start point.   Depending on the route back, this run can be between 14-20km.

How you can work with me

Had a gait analysis session yesterday with Liz.

My running pattern ticks the boxes for increased injury, hence a pulled hamstring!

I now have the advice I need to help me change my gait for some efficient injury free running. Here’s to a speedy 2021. So if you’re suffering persistent running niggles this is well worth doing!

Thanks Liz – Jenny Howland
